About

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), developed by Dr. Paul Gilbert, is a transdiagnostic psychotherapy that helps individuals develop compassion for self and others while enhancing emotional regulation. It draws on Evolutionary Psychology, CBT, Attachment Theory, Polyvagal Theory, and Mindfulness. Compassion is viewed as both a motivation and a skill in responding to suffering. This course introduces Compassion Focused Therapy for Psychosis (CFTp), a CFT adaptation for those experiencing voices, unshared beliefs, or other psychosis symptoms. Using the biopsychosocial and “three systems” models of threat, drive, and soothing, CFTp supports emotional regulation and reduces self-criticism and shame. It adopts a trauma-informed lens, recognizing how early adversity, exclusion, and shame heighten threat responses. Participants will explore compassionate imagery, multiple selves work, and letter writing to reduce distress, build emotional safeness, and strengthen inner compassion. By the end of this course, participants will be able to: • Describe CFT’s history and theoretical foundations. • Explain core concepts like the three flows of compassion and common blocks. • Identify how CFT aids individuals with psychosis and threat sensitivity. • Apply the three Circles model in psychoeducation and therapy. • Use attention training and mindfulness. • Support clients with threat-based emotions. • Explain the role of compassionate letter writing.
