About
This 3 hour workshop focuses on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approaches for managing command hallucinations, which are auditory verbal hallucinations that instruct individuals to perform specific actions. Given the distress and potential risk associated with these experiences, understanding their nature, impact, and effective intervention strategies is crucial. The workshop explores theoretical frameworks, empirical research, and practical techniques to conceptualize and address command hallucinations. Participants will learn evidence-based strategies, including cognitive restructuring, imagery modification, and behavioural experiments, to reduce compliance with harmful commands and empower individuals to regain control over their experiences. By the end of this course, participants will be able to: 1) Review literature on command hallucinations and theoretical models to understand their development, maintenance, and the factors influencing compliance. 2) Interpret how individuals perceive and experience command hallucinations, including the power dynamics between the individual and their voices. 3) Establish treatment objective aimed at reducing compliance with distressing commands and empowering clients 4) Implement coping strategies, cognitive change techniques, and behavioural experiments to challenge beliefs about voice power and omniscience. 5) Apply imagery modification, voice dialogue, schema change, and assertiveness training in clinical work with clients Best Psychological Services is approved by the Canadian Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists.
